Black smokers are hydrothermal vents in the ocean floor where hot lava flows out and mixes with seawater. They were discovered by scientists in 1977. These sulfide chimneys support unknown rich biological communities that thrive in the absence of sunlight. They are called extremophiles because they live in such physically or geochemically extreme conditions.
